It’s a big day for OpenAI with the release of ChatGPT Work and the GPT‑5.6 family of models after a limited preview.
“ChatGPT Work is an agent in ChatGPT that helps you take on more ambitious tasks,” OpenAI writes. “It can gather information across your apps and workflows to create finished materials like sheets, slides, docs, and web apps, and stay with complex projects for hours by breaking them into smaller steps and completing them independently.”
ChatGPT Work is built on Codex, the coding agent OpenAI had recently expanded to support productivity work in addition to software development. It’s powered by the GPT-5.6 frontier model that OpenAI also released today and provides state of the art reasoning through multi-step tasks and creating materials based on templates and reference files.
ChatGPT Work is rolling out today now for those on ChatGPT Pro, Enterprise, and Edu plans, and it’s coming to Plus and Business plans in the next few days. It’s also available if you use the ChatGPT desktop app, even if you’re on the free plan.
Meanwhile, the GPT-5.6 family of models includes the new OpenAI flagship model, called Sol plus Terra for everyday work and Luna, its most cost-effective model.
“GPT‑5.6 Sol sets a new standard for both intelligence and efficiency, achieving state-of-the-art results across coding, knowledge work, cybersecurity, and science while outperforming previous and competing frontier models with fewer tokens and at lower estimated cost,” OpenAI explains. “The result is stronger performance per dollar: more successful work for the same spend, or comparable results at a lower total cost. We also introduce a new way to accelerate the most demanding work: ultra is our highest-capability setting, coordinating multiple agents across parallel workstreams to finish complex tasks faster. Stronger computer use and design judgment make GPT‑5.6 Sol our most polished collaborator yet, helping it inspect, refine, and deliver ready-to-use results.”
GPT-5.6 Sol arrives with OpenAI’s strongest safeguards yet and it’s the company’s best-ever coding model, outperforming even Anthropic Fable 5. Likewise, Terra just outperforms Fable 5 too, while Luna outperforms Opus 4.8, and each does so at about two-thirds the cost. GPT-5.6 represents a big improvement in design judgment, which helps it “create tasteful, ergonomic, and functional interfaces.” And it has improvements in compute, knowledge work, cybersecurity, and research.
Availability is complicated by the three different models and the various ChatGPT tiers, but GPT‑5.6 is available today across ChatGPT, Codex, and the OpenAI API. GPT‑5.6 is priced per 1M tokens across three model sizes: Sol is $5 input/$30 output; Terra is $2.50 input/$15 output; and Luna is $1 input/$6 output.
