Should I stick with WordPress?

I have a personal blog that currently lives on WordPress. In fact, it’s actually my original Windows Live Spaces…erm, space, which dates back to 2006. When Microsoft killed that service, they helpfully ported all our old spaces’ posts and comments over to WordPress, where I just sort of continued maintaining it from that point forward. Since that time, modern social media happened, so I sort of let it wither on the vine. But a few years later, I decided to register my domain name through their service to give myself a “personal website” during a job search, and I’ve been paying to host it there ever since. I also connected an Office 365 tenant to it, and I’ve been using the domain to run my vanity email.

To be clear, I don’t really do much with this site…I post maybe an average of 1-2 times per year. I have a few of my other socials pulling into the page. But in truth, I mostly maintain it for nostalgia and 20 years of history. That said, I would like to get back to writing on a more regular basis. I have plans to maybe start a podcast and link to it there (maybe a separate discussion).

Anyway, this morning I received my notice of annual subscription renewal, which is $96/year for the WordPress Premium subscription (so it can have something other than the vanilla WordPress theme), and I guess another $20/year for the domain. It’s not a huge investment, but it also feels a bit wasteful to keep shelling out this amount annually for the equivalent of a digital curio cabinet that I dust once in a while.

I’m curious to start a discussion around modern blogging platforms. What are other members on the site using? I’m not looking for anything too flashy…mostly just a place I can brand and house content that’s too long or niche to live natively on other socials. Should I look at Medium, Substack, or something else? Do they make it easy/possible to migrate old content over, or should I just revert my WP site to the free tier and start fresh? Does it even make sense in 2026 to have a “personal website domain” if you’re not running a money-making business with it? Discuss!
