Microsoft Launches Cloud Gaming

Cloud Gaming—formerly Project xCloud—will launch tomorrow as a feature of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate in 22 countries at no additional cost. Subscribers will be able to access over 150 game titles via an Xbox console or Android mobile device.

“You will find a fantastic, curated selection of games available in the Xbox Game Pass library, including popular Xbox Game Studios titles such as Tell Me Why, Grounded, Forza Horizon 4, and Battletoads, along with favorites from our content partners like Spiritfarer, Untitled Goose Game, and Destiny 2,” Microsoft’s Kareem Choudhry announced. “Similar to Xbox Game Pass for Console and PC, you can expect the library to evolve over time based on members’ feedback, with new games added all the time.”

Does the $1 for new members still convert your remaining XBL Gold into Game Pass Ultimate? Is it beneficial to max out my Gold membership prior to upgrading for $1? I have Gold until May 2021.

Thanks!

No support for Windows 10? Too bad. It would have been nice to check it out on a laptop.

Last I heard it was being tested internally.

At least I'll be able to get a better feel for the service's latency now that it will run on my hardwired console.

In reply to sevenacids:

I'm excited for the official announcement but kept looking for the options to play it via browser or XBOX App on Windows 10. I hope that is right around the corner.

Case and point for me…yes, I play the much-maligned Fallout 76. It is on Game Pass right now for PC but it doesn't' sync my Level 105 character from the XBOX. So I am hoping the XCLOUD version will keep it in sync.

In reply to sevenacids:

This looks like a classic right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing. The Surface team is spearheading Microsoft's efforts to move to ARM, this is a perfect fit for that scenario, and somehow Surface Pro X isn't the first development target? Even when other ARM devices from other companies (Samsung and Apple) are being released?

I understand they want to lead where it can be successful and popular and get good praise, but you also have to serve your core fan base. And they don't have to limit it to Surface X, just show their customers that they have solutions and they care about them.

Surface Pro X with XCloud is a lot more compelling than Surface Pro X with only app store apps, right? And it would help sell hardware, too.

In reply to solomonrex:

Agreed…I have a Surface Pro X and I find it slightly underrated and not worth of the "it doesn't run anything" comments…beyond Android Studio, I've not ran into show stoppers. In fact, I've been a little surprised how it has played Steam and GOG games. Adding X-Box Cloud almost could make this my primary day to day mobile machine.

I never play these things on mobile devices so not that exciting to me yet but I'd love for this service to come the xbox hardware. Probably the worst modern day experience is waiting for a new game to download and then having to manage storage, esp if you aren't sure about the game in the first place. I hope they eventually have a way to just jump into a new game right on the console itself.

I really hope they increase the number of countries.. people exist out there. With fiber connections too. Besides, they have a huge footprint of data centers globally so this shouldn't be a far reach.
