Microsoft Launches HoloLens 2 Development Edition

It will set you back a cool $3500, but if you want a HoloLens 2, today is the day to preorder the Development Edition.

“HoloLens 2 offers the most comfortable and immersive mixed reality experience available, enhanced by the reliability, security, and scalability of cloud and AI services from Microsoft. $3,500 per device,” the HoloLens 2 website notes. That’s the same price that Microsoft said it would charge for the normal, shipping version of HoloLens when it arrives later in 2019.

The HoloLens 2 Development Edition differs from that standalone HoloLens 2 in that it includes a $500 Azure credit and trial versions of Unity Pro and a PiXYZ Plugin. Developers interested in the product can apply to join the Mixed Reality Developer Program. And they must live in the US, France, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, or the United Kingdom.

HoloLens 2 is a dramatic improvement over the original HoloLens, with a much better field of view, improved clarity and resolution, a new gesture-based system for “touching” and interacting with holograms, and a more comfortable and ergonomic design.

And if $3500 sounds a bit steep, remember that this is a significant discount over the original HoloLens. And that Microsoft is offering a $99 monthly payment plan.
