Microsoft Issues Reliability Updates for Surface Book, Pro 4

Microsoft this week issued a set of firmware updates for Surface Book and Surface Pro 4, all aimed at improving the reliability of the devices.

“We’ve released updated drivers and firmware for Surface Book and for Surface Pro 4 devices running Windows 10 Creators Update or above,” Microsoft’s Brandon Records writes. “These updates improve camera stability and device reliability.”

I had coincidentally updated a Surface Book on Wednesday night, which was the day these updates first appeared, and I noticed them in Windows Update. But I figured it would be next week before Microsoft got around to documenting them, so this was a nice surprise.

It is perhaps also notable that this is the first time Surface Book has received a firmware update since April. But Surface Pro 4 also received updates in July, August, and September.

The firmware updates look quite similar between the two devices (which are themselves quite similar from a components perspective). But here’s a rundown for each.

Surface Book October 11 release includes:

 • Intel AVStream Camera 2500 v30.15063.10999.4731 improves camera stability.
 • Intel Control Logic v30.15063.10999.4731 improves camera stability.
 • Intel CSI2 Host Controller v30.15063.10999.4731 improves camera stability.
 • Intel Imaging Signal Processor 2500 v30.15063.10999.4731 improves camera stability.
 • Microsoft Camera Front v30.15063.10999.4731 improves camera stability.
 • Microsoft Camera IR Front v30.15063.10999.4731 improves camera stability.
 • Microsoft Camera Rear v30.15063.10999.4731 improves camera stability.
 • Surface Camera Windows Hello v1.0.85.1 improves camera stability.

Surface Pro 4 October 11 release includes:

 • Intel AVStream Camera 2500 v30.15063.10999.4731 improves camera stability.
 • Intel Control Logic v30.15063.10999.4731 improves camera stability.
 • Intel CSI2 Host Controller v30.15063.10999.4731 improves camera stability.
 • Intel Imaging Signal Processor 2500 v30.15063.10999.4731 improves camera stability.
 • Microsoft Camera Front v30.15063.10999.4731 improves camera stability.
 • Microsoft Camera IR Front v30.15063.10999.4731 improves camera stability.
 • Microsoft Camera Rear v30.15063.10999.4731 improves camera stability.
 • Surface Camera Windows Hello v1.0.85.1 improves camera stability.
 • Surface Integration v1.0.170.0 improves device reliability.
 • Surface Embedded Controller Firmware v103.1791.258.0 improves device reliability.

It was so freaking annoying on my Surface Pro 4 this update. Just out of the blue my action center started dinging like crazy giving me notification of each item on the list above over and over. Just ding ding ding. I thought my Surface had Tourette's.

Updated my SB yesterday. Widows Hello hasn't worked since. Was quite fast before.

Can anyone comment on whether this improves wake from standby? Multiple times each day I'll close my Surface Pro 4, get up and walk to a meeting, open it up, and it will take 2-4 minutes until the screen turns back on and the OS is usable again. This happens 9 out of 10 times.

I keep waiting for that magical update that will finally make my Surface Pro 4… Oh who am kidding, my next laptop will not be from Microsoft. HP seems to be making a nice Surface clone these days.

you gotta give kudos to Microsoft, any other company would have long discontinued updates on a two year old product like the surface book. Microsoft is still trying to fix it.. err, I mean, making it better :)

Don't own one, but Surface Book always looked good to me, except for that darn gap around the hinge. I wish MS had taken a little more time to engineer that out of the design.

In reply to Bob_Shutts:

As someone who does own a Surface Book… …You get used to the gap. In fact you kind of get proud of it as you pull out your Surface Book in a cafe full of look-alike Macbooks because you're device is unique and edgy. Of course I'm an artist by trade so I've always been drawn to that which is unique and edgy.

Though not Microsoft Edge.

I just don't understand Microsoft's timetable and policies for firmware and driver updates. Several days ago I got four or five driver updates on my Book at the same time updates for the new Surface Pro had been announced. Now I am seeing nothing on my Book even though they are expected. This isn't the first time one of my Surfaces has not received drivers at the same time everybody else is discussing them for that specific model.

Absolute. Puzzlement.

What reliability issues?

Just applied the update and now my Surface Book won't go to sleep. Closing the lid or pushing the power button simply turns of the screen: when I open it up, I'm instantly on the desktop, without seeing the lockscreen.

Also, going to start menu > power > sleep does the same thing: it only turns off the screen.

As a result, battery drains very rapidly: I lost 10% over night.
