Stadia is Coming to Chromecast with Google TV, More Android TV Devices

Google announced today that it is finally bringing the Stadia streaming game service to its Chromecast with Google TV on June 23. It is also bringing Stadia to some Android TV OS devices on that date as well.

“The first version of Stadia on Chromecast with Google TV is launching on June 23,” the Stadia team revealed. “In addition, we’re excited to announce something entirely new – you’ll also be able to play Stadia on compatible Android TV OS devices on June 23.”

On that date, Stadia will be officially supported on Chromecast with Google TV, plus Hisense Android Smart TVs (U7G, U8G, U9G), Nvidia Shield TV, Nvidia Shield TV Pro, Onn FHD Streaming Stick and UHD Streaming Device, Philips 8215, 8505, and OLED 935/805 Series Android TVs, and the Xiaomi MIBOX3 and MIBOX4. And if you have an unsupported Android TV device, you can opt into experimental support to play Stadia, Google notes.

To get started, you just need to install the Stadia app on your Chromecast with Google TV or supported Android TV device starting on June 23. The service will work with the official Stadia Controller, which I recommend, or any other compatible game controller with Bluetooth support.

Finally.

I replaced our living room TV a few months ago and, anticipating that this support was coming, bought a Chromecast with Google TV. The new TV is frustratingly short on HDMI ports, and I ended up cutting out the Chromecast Ultra from the mix. I’ve been playing Stadia on my phone and laptop for a few months now. I have been missing the big screen experience, so I am happy to see a real calendar date for availability.

When the Chromecast with Google TV came out minus support for Stadia, they might as well have said they weren’t fully committed to Stadia and it could soon end up on the Killed by Google mountain of failures. With the support now coming, one might hope that Google is a bit more committed, at least in the near to mid-term.
