IKEA is Expanding Its Smart Home Push with New Smart Sensors

IKEA PARASOLL door and window sensor

IKEA today announced a new set of smart home sensors that will help its customers monitor their homes from anywhere. They arrive in 2024.

“Our research in the latest Life at Home Report found that people prioritize comfort and security in their homes,” IKEA’s Stjepan Begic said. “Everyone wants to feel safe at home and we feel excited about entering a new smart product area that creates not only a better, but safer life at home. We believe these products can provide our customers with peace of mind and a greater sense of control and comfort.”

There are three new sensors and, yes, they are easy to spell and pronounce as most IKEA products. The PARASOLL door and window sensor can be mounted on windows and doors and notifies users when they are opened or closed. The VALLHORN wireless motion sensor can be used indoors or outdoors, and it activates customizable lights when it detects movement. And the BADRING water leakage sensor notifies users when it detects water leaks, via mobile notifications or its own built-in alarm.

These sensors will soon be part of a growing family of IKEA smart home products that include, among other things, its Sonos-based smart speakers—which come in lamp and shelving form factors plus a smart picture frame—smart air purifiers, smart lighting, smart window shades, and smart remotes and light switches.

Each of the sensors is based on the Zigbee smart home standard. And each will work with IKEA’s DIRIGERA smart hub and can be controlled with the IKEA Smart Home mobile app. PARASOLL and VALLHORN will be available in January 2024, IKEA says, with BADRING following in April 2024.
