April Brings Another Blockbuster Month for Games for Gold

It’s April 1, and you know what that means. No, not silly fake headlines. It’s time for another round of Games with Gold, and this looks like a particularly solid month.

Reminder: All Xbox 360 games in the Games for Gold promotion also work with Xbox One in Backwards Compatibility mode too. There’s never been a better time to be an Xbox One owner.

Here’s what’s free this month. It’s one of the better selections in recent memory.

Xbox One

Ryse: Son of Rome
Normal price: $19.99
Free availability: April 1 to April 30

Description: Amidst the chaos of the late Roman Empire, become soldier Marius Titus and embark on a perilous campaign to avenge the death of your family and defend the honor of Rome. In Gladiator Mode, step into the Colosseum and fight for the glory, spectacle, and entertainment of the crowds.

Note: As you may recall, this was one of the Xbox One AAA launch titles back in 2013.

The Walking Dead Season 2
Normal price: $24.99
Free availability: April 16 to May 15

Description: The sequel to 2012’s Game of the Year continues the story of Clementine, a young girl orphaned by the undead apocalypse. Left to fend for herself, she has been forced to learn how to survive in an unforgiving world. Experience what it’s like to play as Clementine, meet new survivors, explore new locations and make gruesome decisions in this five-part game series of choice and consequence.

Note: I’ve played the first two Walking Dead games all the way through. This one is well worth getting.

Xbox 360

Darksiders
Normal price: $19.99
Free availability: April 1 to April 15

Description: Caught in an epic struggle between Heaven and Hell, the legendary Horseman is left with only one option- to fight his way out. Wielding the fearsome sword Chaoseater, War must carve a bloody trail through Angels and Demons alike to uncover a dangerous truth…one that may bring about the end of mankind. EXPLORE the streets of a hell-ravaged city or ascend crumbling buildings to face horrors in the sky above. CONQUER Hell’s most terrifying monstrosities using a host of supernatural abilities and devastating combat moves. DESTROY your enemies by unleashing the unstoppable power of your Chaos Form! Darksiders. HEADS. WILL. ROLL.

Assassin’s Creed Revelations
Normal price: $19.99
Free availability: April 16 to April 30

Description: In Assassin’s Creed Revelations, master assassin Ezio Auditore walks in the footsteps of the legendary mentor Altair, on a journey of discovery and revelation. It is a perilous path – one that will take Ezio to Constantinople, the heart of the Ottoman Empire, where a growing army of Templars threatens to destabilize the region. In addition to Ezio’s award-winning story, a refined and expanded online multiplayer experience returns with more modes, more maps and more characters, allowing you to test your assassin skills against others from around the world.

Nice selection. I never got around to any of TWD games, and I have the first one ready to play. Looks like I'll get the second one, too.

I got Ryse when it first came out. It is truly beautiful to look at, but the gameplay gets a bit repetitive.

I am wary about Darksiders. Darksiders II was free last year, I think. I tried playing it recently and it was just terrible. The controls were wonky and there was no indication of where to go to continue missions and whatnot.

I still have not figured out how to get Xbox 360 games with gold downloaded to my xbone. When I try to get them, I get taken to a screen where the price is zero, but it says I need to add payment options. The selection options on this screen take you no where.. MS has not been able to help either. Any ideas?

In reply to rbwatson0:

Maybe go through the motions of buying a non zero price game? Or buy something on the windows store? That's how my cc got in there in the first place. You may also just be able to edit your Microsoft account via the web and examine your payment options in there.

Annoying that you have to have a payment method registered for a zero dollar game.

In reply to rbwatson0:

In reply to rbwatson0:

I had the same issue before. You HAVE to add a payment option (credit card or paypal), do this by logging on to your account via a pc – log in to outlook.com and then go to settings/your account etc. Then, the best way to get the xbox360 games, is to go through the xbox website, again on a pc. You can also 'buy' the game there (for 0€) and then select to download the game to your xbox. After the purchase, just switch on your xbox and the game will automatically be downloaded.

In reply to gelfer:

Guess I should have noted in my first comment that I have a payment options (plural) set up and have bought all my XBOne games as digital downloads.

In reply to rbwatson0:

Do the same thing happen if you try and buy it for the "free price" on Xbox.com?

It sounds like you have a payment option added for one country, but the Xbox one set up to a different location. If you know you have the correct location on your Xbox and the payment option is correct for buying games for Xbox one normally .. I would try and change the location of the Xbox to something completely different form where you are, and restart the Xbox .. Then change the location back to the correct one. If that does not change the behavior .. try and turn off the xbox and then pull the power to it completely and leave it without power for about 10 min . Then plug in again, turn the xbox on and try and "buy" the xbox 360 game again.

By the way can you buy Xbox 360 games in general on your Xbox one, or does that also fail?

Darksiders is a lot of fun – a Zelda game with God of War combat. I liked it despite the silly over the top nature of the thing.
