Call of Duty: WWII Sold 500 Million Units in Three Days

Call of Duty is back, baby! Activision announced today that the latest entry in the blockbuster games series, Call of Duty: WWII made over half a billion dollars—that’s $500 million—in its first three days alone.

“We challenged our players to get their squads back together and they answered the call, with the highest number of players we’ve ever seen on current-gen consoles and PC,” Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg said in a prepared statement. “Call of Duty: WWII returns the franchise to its roots and the results are incredible, selling twice as many units in its opening weekend as last year, and setting the day one record for full-game downloads on PlayStation 4.”

In keeping with the old-school nature of the game itself, Activision is also using an old-school metric it used back in the day to show the dominance of the Call of Duty franchise compared to other, more well-known entertainment types like movies.

So here’s this year’s version.

“Our $500 million opening weekend was not only bigger than Thor: Ragnarok‘s, it was bigger than the opening weekends of both Thor and Wonder Woman combined,” the Activision press release states. “And we’re committed to supporting the community with continuous improvements and new content.

What’s interesting about all this stuff is that $500 million is the only concrete number they’re giving us: “More than Thor and Wonder Woman combined” and “twice as many units in its opening weekend as last year” are both on the vague side.

But know this: Even the worst Call of Duty games are the best-selling game each year. That’s the way this works. So what Call of Duty: WWII has really achieved, I think, is returning the franchise to the level of prestige it previously enjoyed. And that’s well-deserved: Call of Duty: WWII is fantastic.
