Over 1 Million People are Already Playing State of Decay 2

It’s only been broadly available for two days, but over one million people are already playing State of Decay 2, Microsoft’s latest Xbox Play Anywhere title.

“We wanted to welcome and say thank you to the over one million fans playing State of Decay 2, helping break the million player mark,” Microsoft general manager Aaron Greenberg notes.

Granted, the game launched in Early Access for those who purchased the Ultimate Edition on May 18, which was a week ago. But in this new world of Microsoft finding other metrics for success, crossing the million player mark is notable on a video game platform that is being outsold, probably dramatically, by the market leader. (It’s hard to tell what the real difference is here, since this game works on Windows 10 PCs as well as the Xbox One.)

Greenberg provided a few other interesting bits of information about State of Decay 2:

 • Gamers have played the game for a combined six million hours so far.
 • Gamers have streamed over 3.5 million hours of gameplay across Mixer, Twitch and YouTube Gaming via over 41,000 unique broadcasts.
 • Gamers have killed over 675 million (virtual) zombies in State of Decay 2 They’ve thrown over 6 million firecrackers and fireworks, have eaten over 6 million bags of snacks, and have read over 2 million textbooks.
 • On averages, gamers survive for about three days in-game, with some going as long as over a month.

Greenberg also notes that gamers have uncovered a few “bugs and issues” and that Microsoft is working to resolve those quickly.

Sounds like BS ? to me. The game will drop like a rock just like Sea of Thieves which honestly is a shame given the lack of compelling games on Xbox. I hope this changes soon but I’m doubtful.

In reply to Illusive_Man:

Yeah its a very hollow big round number. Partly its Xbox One owners desperate for any new content due to Microsoft continuing to ignore their firstparty problem, and partly its lots of people exploiting the free 14 day game pass trial, just like when SoT came out. That playerbase fell off a cliff after all those free trials ended.

And FWIW, the review scores aren't doing the game any favors.

It’ll chart for June just because it launched near the beginning of the month then come July it will be back down into oblivion.

Ireally want to see a strong vibrant Xbox Brand but it seems that died with the X360. It’s a real shame too. Xbox is about all Microsoft has aside from Surface that is consumer facing.

In reply to Illusive_Man:

why are people hating on a decent game that isn't even $60 just because the platform doesn't have other better exclusives? You people make no fucking sense.

Back in August 2014, I held the firm believe, Microsoft due to their serious mistakes at the XBox One announcement would mobilize with iron will and money to transform XB1 into a respected brand comprising a catalogue of amazing and creative masterpieces. Well, the exact opposite happened.

And now after a long hiathus Microsoft with Pirate Party and this piece publishes buggy and uninspiring projects announced in what seems another era.

When Scalebound was killed, it was time to leave XBox. When a sluggish buggy Windows 10 was released on my Lumia 640 and the succeeding models with SD 210 were introduced, it was time to abandon Windows on phones, too.

Microsoft screwed up their phone and their console business. There is no coming back.
