Sony announced this week that it has now sold over 3 million PlayStation VR systems and about 22 million PS VR games and apps. This milestone is interesting on a number of levels.

“We’d like to thank all our fans for the amazing support, and we’re thrilled that so many of our gamers have experienced the magic of VR and stepped into the captivating worlds that electrify our senses,” Sony’s Mary Yee Vice President writes in the announcement post. “We also want to take this opportunity to thank the developers and publishers who have brought some of the most engaging titles to the platform in North America to date.”

In addition to the hardware and software sales milestones, Sony also revealed that the best-selling PS VR games and apps so far (in order) are The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR, PlayStation VR Worlds, Rec Room, Resident Evil 7 Biohazard, The Playroom VR, Job Simulator, Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, Batman: Arkham VR, Farpoint, and Superhot VR.

And to celebrate the event, Sony is also hosting a digital VR games sales on PlayStation Store through August 28. VR games are up to 40 percent off, or up to 60 percent off for PlayStation Plus subscribers.

So. 3 million.

In one sense, this is an amazing number, and it’s pretty clear that PS VR is a sales leader in this market.

But many will point out that the 3 million figure also points to the limits of VR from a mainstream acceptance standpoint: Sony has sold almost 85 million PlayStation 4 consoles so far, so only about 3.5 percent of PS4 owners have ever purchased a PS VR system to accompany it.

Fair. But that kind of attach rate may, in fact, be high: Beyond controllers and other basics, it’s not clear how well other console peripherals typically sell. And for those who do buy into PS VR, there are over 340 VR games and apps available so far, and more coming in time for the 2018 holiday season. So overall, I’d say that this is pretty healthy.
