Sony Announces the PlayStation Classic

Sony is jumping on the video game nostalgia bandwagon and will release a PlayStation Classic mini-console with 20 pre-loaded games in December.

“Almost 25 years ago, the original PlayStation was introduced to the world,” PlayStation senior vice president Eric Lempel writes in a post to the PlayStation Blog. “It was the first home console in video game history to ship 100 million units worldwide, offering consumers a chance to play games with real-time 3D rendered graphics in their homes for the first time.”

To celebrate this anniversary—OK, to follow in the footsteps of Nintendo and the IP owners of other classic consoles from Atari, Coleco, Mattel, and more—Sony will release the PlayStation Classic mini-console on December 3. It will come with 20 pre-loaded games—including classics like Final Fantasy VII, Jumping Flash, Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, and Wild Arms—and more will be added over time, Sony says.

The console itself is modeled after the look and feel of the original PlayStation, or PS1, but is 45 percent smaller. It comes with wired controllers and connections for modern TVs.

You can learn more about the PlayStation Classic from the PlayStation website. It will cost $99.99 and can be preordered now from “select retailers.” I don’t see it on Amazon.com yet though.

Doesn't come with an AC adapter. It's not like it's hard to find a USB AC adapter, but I doubt they cost much so wouldn't it be nice to include one in the box. The whole games list isn't announced either. Seems a little half baked.

The 32-bit console era is not one that I have any interest in revisiting. PSX games basically fall into one of two categories: 2D games with SNES-quality graphics and CD-quality sound (often including poor voice acting), or 3D games that are so blocky and low-res that it's basically impossible to look at them today and not want to claw your eyes out. None of them has aged well. None of the 2D games has the kind of charm that Nintendo was able to conjure with it's first party titles in the 8- and 16-bit eras. And the 3D games just look so bad that they're just not worth the effort. So many of the best games of this era are parts of series that are still running today, and you should probably just play the newer ones, or wait for an HD remake.

Does anyone think we will ever see an OG XboX mini? Or is the Xbox just not classic enough?

This thing is likely set up to be a legitimate, licensed product as a counter to unsanctioned emulation systems based on Raspberry Pi's and the like. $99 isn't too bad considering you get 2 controllers (even if they are the old design). A Pi, with a decent case, cables, and so on can get close to that amount pretty easily, and it's not even meant to be a commercial product.

Given the power requirements, I imagine Sony is building a Pi-like clone, meaning it's ARM-based and runs an emulator just like the mini Nintendo systems. I'd like to see if this thing is hack-able. I wonder if the thing has any kind of Wi-FI support, or if it supports a USB wireless adapter. I doubt they put a web browser into the game OS though, so it would likely need a hack job to wipe it and run another OS.

I like to see a retro Atari 2600 console that still accepted the old cartridges.
