Sony Celebrates Five Years of PlayStation 4

It’s great to be the king. Five years on, the PlayStation 4 dominates the video game industry, with over 86 million consoles sold.

“It’s hard to believe it’s already been five years since the launch of PlayStation 4,” Sony’s Eric Lempel writes in an announcement post about the milestone. “In that time, we’ve sold more than 86.1 million hardware units, in addition to over 777.9 million software units worldwide.”

Those are some impressive stats. And while no one is really sure how far behind its closest competitor, Microsoft’s Xbox One, is, the consensus is that the PS4 leads by a very wide margin. Probably better than 2-to-1.

Anyway, according to Sony, the five best-selling PS4 titles of all time are Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, Call of Duty: WWII, FIFA 17, FIFA 18, and Grand Theft Auto. And Sony is celebrating this anniversary with a new Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 bundle that will sell for $300 when it becomes available on November 27.

Also, be sure to check out this separate Sony post in which it interviews famous developers about their favorite PS4 games as well.

Shame their customer services policy is terrible. In my case, the complicated family model they use means that people on the same console can play the same games. This does not apply to Fortnite main game however, as I found to my cost. I bought, downloaded on my account. My kid started and wouldn't play. It seems the main game is considered a in-app purchase and these aren't playable on the same console. I asked Sony to revoke my license and transfer to my kids, but they wouldn't budge – saying it was an in-app purchase and not transferable. I actually bought via the web. Anyway, you live and learn. Xbox seems to have a much better policy with regard to this sort of thing.

If you purchase a skin in Fortnite, that's tied to that user. At least the game is free. There is nothing you *need* to purchase in Fortnite to play the full game.

In reply to Skolvikings:

I should have been clearer. I meant the 'Save the World' product. It's considered an 'add-on' like a skin but is really the 'main' game and once you download it – you are unable to 'digitally' return it e.g. if you bought it in error.

Most people would assume 'Save the World' would be a game and hence 'shareable' with other users on the same PS4 – there is no information to the contrary; however, in this case, it doesn't seem so. Sony's policy of not being able to return add-on's then kicks in. The issue I had was Sony's complete lack of understanding of what was going on and the refusal to apply some common sense. I still wanted the product, I'd downloaded it less than 24 hours before contacting Sony and I wanted to use it on the same PS4 – just under another account. It seems silly to buy a game twice to be used on the same console.

As I understand, Xbox has a policy where you are ablet o return a digital title if you don't like it, within a set timeframe.

For one thing, it's a bit of a stretch to say that Microsoft and their Xbox One line is Sony's closest competitor. The gap between 1st and 2nd is astronomical. Futhermore, the Xbox might even be in third place behind the Nintendo Switch. If so, that is really, really BAD for Microsoft. One could even say that would be a total rejection of the Xbox One platform, if the Switch is in 2nd place or trailing by a small amount. This is super important and not the "fabled" Microsoft has more dedicated gamers….idea. That's because developers look to see which platform they will develop first and which one gets the expansion packs. In other words, kiss those Call of Duty expansion packs goodbye.

Remember this quote from a couple of years ago after the Microsoft event where they announced the Xbox One S and X? The quote goes like this:

This is what WINNING looks like!

What's also interesting to know (and I read it somewhere) Playstation Plus is now KING of online console game play. Xbox Live is no longer KING. In a way, it makes sense, being that the PS4 sold over 80 mil consoles and has a tremendously rich ecosystem of free games (new and classics). To be honest, I am somewhat surprised by this fact, because Xbox Live has been around longer than PS+. Then again, as a PS4 gamer, I always see tons and tons of users broadcasting their (boring) games online, in addition to all the virtual communities setup and accessible thru the PS4.

There's more…

From what I have read, Playstation is also winning the war with streaming games. Playstation Now is winning in the war against Xbox in this space.

I guess that's it for me. For the past few years, I trying to buy an Xbox One for the sake of just having one. However, with Playstation's all-around dominance, does it makes sense to do so? LOL…to be honest, I am not even done with some of Xbox 360 games, particularly the last two Splinter Cells (lol). Maybe I'll just finish them.

Lastly, I have said this before and clearly I was right about it. When Microsoft is getting their butts kicked, whether it be by Google, Sony, Amazon, Apple, etc…., they need to stop revealing to the public how they are going to bounce back. Remember how we were told that the Xbox One X was a game changer? Remember, when we were told that "This is what winning looks like?" These are instances when Microsoft practically told their competitors what they were going to do and gave them ample warning for them to effectively respond…..and that's exactly what THEY did. Microsoft needs to SHUT UP about it. Remember when we were told that people will buy the Xbox One X because they have 4K TVs? I can go on and on and on and on…..

Its funny, all five of the best-selling PS4 titles are cross platform titles, none are Playstation only titles. I'm sadly surprised "The Last of Us" isn't among them. It is the best PS4 exclusive hands down!

It must be embarrassing for the Xbox team to have fallen so far from the top. But losing the crown has made Xbox a better platform, I think. Xbox will be the king again. Just give it time.

When you've got nothing new to show and are resting on your laurels you advertise your laurels and hope nobody notices you've got nothing new to show.

And you skip showing up in big trade events where that's obvious.

Seriously, having an event to say "look how old our product line is" takes a certain level of guts and you've got to give them credit for the level of hubris.
