Sony Won’t Be Attending E3 2019

Sony won’t be attending E3 next year. The company confirmed in a statement to Game Informer that it will be missing out on E3 2019 as it looks to find different ways of innovative ways of engaging its customer base.

“PlayStation fans mean the world to us and we always want to innovate, think differently and experiment with new ways to delight gamers. As a result, we have decided not to participate in E3 in 2019. We are exploring new and familiar ways to engage our community in 2019 and can’t wait to share our plans with you,” the company said.

The announcement is a huge blow to PlayStation fans who have been looking forward to the upcoming games. Especially since the company cancelled its PlayStation Experience event that usually happens in December earlier this year, the decision to not attend E3 next year is certainly quite interesting. It’s possible Sony will hold another event next year, though the company said it won’t hold a press conference around the same time as E3.

As for Microsoft, who just announced a bunch of things at X0 2018 earlier this month, the company will continue to attend E3 as usual. “E3 is an incredible platform to showcase the vibrancy and creativity of the video game industry. The ESA continues to expand the event’s reach to fans and the industry, both in attendance and online, and we look forward to what’s ahead at E3 2019,” Xbox head Phil Spencer said.

With the next generation of gaming consoles expected to arrive in 2020, the gaming community will have their eyes locked at both Microsoft and Sony. There are a lot of things at stake here, and both the companies need to deliver on hardware as well as the content — and of course, exclusive titles.

But if they do their own show elsewhere, what does it really matter? Only fans who visit the show will be disappointed. Everyone else will just watch it over the net.

Well, I am not surprised about Sony. After all they won the Console War. Microsoft, on the other hand, needs excitement in their camp. MSFT thought they had a game changer with the Xbox One X. It was a game changer, and Sony sold more PS4.

All in all, if Sony really does not show up at E3, they can hold another event where just they are the main focus.

We are at kind of a weird spot in console gaming. A lot of people are predicting an upcoming PS5…but why? How many developers can even pump out a game SO demanding that it WON'T run on a PS4? I mean if Red Dead Redemption II, which already looks STUNNINGLY photo-realistic, can run fine on even a "regular" PS4, then why is a PS5 even needed in 2019?. Any PS5 "exclusive" games would really be "artificially exclusive" as I am sure that with (worst case) a few settings adjustments, said games would indeed run on a PS4 in some capacity. It's not like the old days where Konami and Capcom were practically begging Nintendo to make a follow-up console so that they could explore much more detailed and complex graphics. I am really curious to see how this situation plays out. If I were Sony I would just release a "pan-playstation" console that played every single PS(1,2,3,4) disc ever made and call it the PlayStation R or PlayStation Neo or something vague like that. But that's why Sony would never hire me for sure :).

In reply to JG1170:

I think there's going to be a lot of disappointment with the next gen consoles, to the point where people will even wonder if it really is a next generation. It will be, but it'll be like a graphics card generation or a phone generation – better but not the radical step up console gamers are used to and most software run on both the old and new generations for quite some time (possibly right up until when we're looking at the PS6/Xbox 5)

In reply to maethorechannen:

Umm I disagree. I had a Xbox One S and got the X. Huge difference in performance while on 1080p (higher FPS and no dynamic resolution dipping) and connected to a 4K output source with a patched game it is like another world.

A person sitting on a PS4 today (non pro) would see a huge improvement going to whatever the PS5 will be IF…..games are backwards compatible. If not then yes the PS5 will have a hard time starting off.

They need to make PS4 games compatible with the PS5. That way there will be a huge library of games that are going to perform way better.

Sony fans have lost the graphics argument, It'll be hilarious if they lose the "where are the games" argument next year.

In reply to maethorechannen:

Who even argues about graphics? Play the console you prefer. As an example, half of my favorite games are on the Switch. BOTW was the game of the year in 2017 and guess what, it looked and played awesome. Who cares if a spec sheet or artificial benchmark says otherwise?

Trade shows are expensive. Doing a major one when you have nothing to show is a very bad use of money and it's not like the Playstation group is a big part of Sony's revenue stream.

In reply to Stooks:

It's the largest product unit but they have a LOT of product units. Gaming (including hardware and games) is about 17% of their revenue. The problem with that is without something BIG to show they're unlikely at this point to change their market share or revenue stream. People have already made their platform choice for this generation so they're coasting to save costs and not have big press stories about how little they brought that was new.

A new generation? Do the show.

Several big exclusive games? Do the show.

A major new service? Do the show.

Platform generation is still new and fighting for share? Do the show.

We're still here? The show advertises they're coasting on existing product. Don't show.
