Yes, Spotify is Coming to Xbox One (Updated)

UPDATE: Here’s yet another confirmation: The Spotify app’s Xbox Store listing is now available online, complete with screenshots. –Paul

A Microsoft promotional video has subtly confirmed that Spotify is coming to the Xbox One video game console. The video follows an earlier revelation in which a Microsoft employee was found to have been using the app.

Microsoft has yet to publicly acknowledge that Spotify is coming to Xbox One, at least not explicitly. But this past week, Larry Hyrb—known to many as Xbox’s Major Nelson—was shown to have been using an app called “Spotify Music – for Xbox”

And now, a few days later, Hyrb can be seen using the app in the latest episode of the “This Week on Xbox” promotional video. No, he never discusses it, or even shows the app. Instead, you can see that it’s available in a clip of the Xbox Guide, which can be seen at about the 9-minute mark in the video. It happens very quickly.

Yes, Spotify is Coming to Xbox One

But confirmation is confirmation. And it appears that an official Spotify app is indeed under development for Xbox One.

Thanks to the many readers who tipped me off to this.

So, an UWP app after the release of the Centenial app for desktop, and little work made for the windows Phone 8.0 app for so long?

What does it mean? It's confusing.

I wonder if it'll just be a back end thing without much of a ui for listening to music in game?

In reply to adamcorbally:

It works to play music in the backend while playing games, and then it basically looks the same as Groove Music does with a simplified Music controller in the Guide where you can skip to next song, pause/play, change volume, and hen also a way to get to the full app

The full app also looks very similar like Groove Music does .. works great so far

So basically UWP is coming for Spotify. That is what MS has been wanting with Centennial. Bring over the Win32 and gradually move to the code to full UWP. This might be a full rewrite, but it'll be interesting to see if a new UWP app hits not just the Xbox, but everywhere.

I also wonder about iTunes. It could be that Apple is not in a rush, but services revenues are growing so expanding the platform availability is important. What if MS cut a deal for iTunes to come to Xbox One and the product to go full UWP? I know we'll all say that's unlikely, but how many said it was impossible for iTunes to come to the Windows Store? Just seems like it's taking awhile for an application when using the Centennial Bridge does not seem all that resource intensive or time consuming.

MS could have some huge Store news whenever they move Office over (also an iTunes situation), if they can get Creative Suite in there, and when iTunes comes. While people do use Chrome, I think many don't care about their browser. Right now they do because Edge does not have parity yet, but I think Edge will get there. Then there's the question of building versions of Edge for iOS and Android. MS NEEDS to do that to have any shot with it because cross platform favorites, etc are essential. It's nice to assume everyone will use Cortana on their phones for this, but that's not realistic.

Seems that option is already well supported: support.spotify.com/us/listen_everywhere/on_speaker/listening-to-spotify-on-speakers-and-sound-systems/

In reply to skane2600:

To paraphrase Ansel Adams, "The go-to device for playing music is the one you have with you."

If you're in the living room, all you have to do is launch the ol' Spotify and enjoy tunes using the superior sound from your TV. Or would you expect people to sit there and listen to a tinny phone speaker when they have much better sound RIGHT THERE?

So if you own an XBOne and use Spotify, now you can. Dead. Freaking. Simple. No mystery as to why that's good, no question of the great utility of the development. It's just good for the people who want it.

Maybe next time they'll remember you and make your favorite feature available.

You own a Xbox, and a Spotify account.

and then a new third option: you like to listen to the music you enjoy when you play your games.

One of the most requested features for Xbox One was to add ability to play your own music in the background like Xbox 360 could do .. and true to form of the new Microsoft they listened and added that feature (the management team that did not included it in the first place, is not the same team working for xbox today)

and they also added ability to play Groove Music…. and now also Spotify, and who knows, eventually even iTunes might come if Apple feels it is worth it, stranger things have happened (and iTunes is coming to Windows 10 S after all)

Microsoft should really consider doubling down on Xbox gaming. Sure they are losing currently but aside from Cloud services and declining Windows sales
