Microsoft’s Xbox One consoles are getting support for 1440p with an upcoming update. Xbox team’s Kevin Gammill today teased the new feature, first being rolled out to Xbox Insiders.
With support for 1440p on the Xbox One X and Xbox One S, users will be able to get a better gaming experience. A lot of Xbox One X owners don’t actually have a 4K display to play native 4K games on, so support for 1440p will allow them to benefit more from the Xbox One X’s power with improved game visuals with the use of supersampling. The Xbox One X already uses supersampling to support 1080p displays, but that’s not maximising the full power of the One X, and support for 1440p will allow gamers with a 1440p display to get more out of the console.

Many questions recently around the timing of our 1440p support. Those of you in our early preview ring should be pleasantly surprised very soon if you have an Xbox One S or Xbox One X.

As for the Xbox One S, it’s not clear if Microsoft will be enabling 1440p for gaming, and it’s very likely 1440p support is only coming for video playback. Microsoft isn’t sharing many details on 1440 support for the Xbox One family just yet, but we’ll keep you posted once the update is officially rolled out to all consoles.

The million dollar question. Will games automatically adjust or will they have to be patched?

Example – Ghost Recon Wildlands does 4k and looks amazing. If you plug into a 1440p monitor will it do 1440p and look better than 1080p or drop down to 1080p then upscale 1080p to 1440p because it can't do 4K and does not know about 1440p because it needs a patch.

If it drops to 1080p and then upscales…..that would be the worst option, but the most likely.
