Instagram Updates Its Algorithmic Feed

Instagram is making some changes to its feed. The company today announced that it’s making some critical changes to the feed based on feedback from users, mostly to do with the algorithmic feed.

Like other algorithmic feeds, Instagram’s algorithmic feed fails to show fresh content most of the time. Instead, it keeps showing you posts that you may have already seen in the past. To (partly) fix this problem, Instagram says it is making changes to the feed which will now make sure new mosts are shown more often. This way, your feed will stay fresh all the time — at least according to Instagram. “Based on your feedback, we’re also making changes to ensure that newer posts are more likely to appear first in feed. With these changes, your feed will feel more fresh, and you won’t miss the moments you care about,” the company said in a blog post announcing the changes.

Instagram is making another important change to the feed. Right now, opening Instagram instantly refreshes your feed without letting you view the posts that are shown when you first open up the app. To tackle this issue, Instagram is testing a New Posts button that will keep your position when you first load the app and then let you load in new posts at your own will.

Instagram has faced a lot of backlash for its algorithmic feed in the recent months. Algorithmic feeds have never been popular amongst users, as they are often bad at showing the posts that you actually want to see and may lead to your feed being filled with old posts on apps like Instagram if you don’t follow a lot of accounts. Either way, Instagram says it will continue to make changes to the feed to improve the experience for users, so hopefully we’ll get to see some more meaningful changes like today’s updates in the future.
