Nokia 2 Promises 2 Days of Battery Life

It’s been a while since I’ve covered HMD’s Nokia-branded Android handset efforts, but this one deserves a look: It just announced the Nokia 2, a low-end smartphone that promises two days of battery life.
“With the Nokia 2, we wanted to replicate the unique Android experience we’ve delivered so far with the long-lasting battery which so many fans associate and expect from their Nokia phones,” HMD Chief Product Officer Juho Sarvikas notes. “To make this a reality, every component of the Nokia 2, from the display to battery, chipset to system design, has been engineered to draw as little power as possible from the huge battery to give fans a long-lasting phone they can rely on.”

From a specifications perspective, the Nokia 2 doesn’t look like anything special: It’s powered by a low-end 1.3 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 212 processor, 1 GB of RAM, and 8 GB of internal storage (upgradeable to 128 GB with microSD), and its 5-inch display is an LCD panel running at just 1280 x 720. But the device itself is attractive and professional looking, and it’s made of aluminum and sculpted polycarbonate which should bring a momentary thrill to even the most jaded former Nokia user.
The battery life may just be the icing on the cake. According to HMD, it was able to achieve two full days of battery life through a combination of factors that include a high-capacity 4100 mAh battery and components that have been chosen and configured for this use.
And the price is right: At just €99—about $115—the Nokia 2 is truly affordable. It will be available in three color choices, Pewter/Black, Pewter/White and Copper/Black, and provides a pure Android 7.1.1 experience.
Will it come to the U.S.? It’s unlikely, given how things have gone with previous Nokia designs, the Nokia 3, 5, 6, and 8. But this phone could do much to keep the Nokia brand alive in emerging markets, especially, and it looks like a winning combination of value and functionality.
