Stardock Fences 4 Supports Windows 11

Stardock has announced Fences 4, which provides new features, a refreshed user interface, and support for Windows 11.

“Fences 4 is being designed to meet the needs of today’s PC user,” Stardock CEO Brad Wardell said. “Fences has always been a great way to show a clean desktop or to organize it and now we are adding features that allow users who want a minimalistic desktop to have that while also supporting users who use the desktop as a natural extension of their workspace.”

For those unfamiliar, Fences is a utility that lets you stay organized by automatically placing your shortcuts and icons into fences, which are resizable shaded areas on your desktop. Fences are highly customizable, can be rolled up to save desktop space, and can be toggled with a double-click.

For Fences 4, which is now available in alpha, Stardock is adding Windows 11 compatibility, virtual desktop support, enhanced search features, roaming profiles, and more. And a new Fences for Business offering will help administrators lock their entire desktop layout for kiosks and use a Snapshots feature to replicate layouts across multiple devices.

Fences 4 is available via Stardock’s Object Desktop suite. You can learn more here.

<p>Used to use Fences on Win 7 to organize my apps. With the start menu in Win 10 it was no longer needed. Guess I will be looking at Fences again with the improvements Win 11 has brought. Are we sure someone on the MS SLT doesn’t have a lot of Stardock stock, and that’s why they ripped all the useful stuff out of the UI.</p>

<p>As the desktop itself may be the least changed UI component in Windows 11 vs Windows 10, this doesn’t seem like much of a big deal.</p><p><br></p><p>That said, I keep 6 things on my Windows 11 desktop: This PC, Network, .LNKs to my home and work directories (<strong><em>not</em></strong> my profile directory), a .LNK for Recent Documents, and a plain text To Do file (not a .LNK). I now have Recycle Bin in a dock, so I don’t need it on the desktop.</p><p><br></p><p>I keep the 1st 5 of those on the left side, This PC at the top and the others below it. I keep the To Do file on the right. Yes, I also use calendars. For me, Fences would provide no value and only use RAM and disk storage unnecessarily.</p>

<p>Stardock should make a Fences for videogames; that way I can consolidate my local game installs, GoG games, Epic games, Steam games, Game Pass and Windows Store games all in one place without having to think about where they are or what to launch! I mean, Microsoft should do that first but who are we kidding here?</p>
