Proton Adds Account Monitoring to its Password Manager

Proton today announced that it is adding a suite of online account security protections to its Proton Pass password manager, some of which are included in the free tier.

“To keep you safe, we’re introducing Pass Monitor for our password manager, a new suite of security features to help you secure your data,” Proton’s Son Nguyen writes in the announcement post. “Pass Monitor alerts you of account weaknesses and data breaches so you can better defend your online accounts against attacks. We believe security should be easy, so Pass Monitor watches out for you automatically and guides you through solutions in the event your data leaks from a third-party service.”

Pass Manager consists of Dark Web monitoring for Proton addresses, email aliases, and up to 10 custom email addresses; a Password Health check-up for weak and reused passwords; inactive 2FA that identifies accounts you can use with 2FA but aren’t; and Proton Sentinel, which uses AI and human analysts to detect and block account takeover attacks.

Password Health and 2FA checks are included in all Proton Pass plans immediately. Dark Web Monitoring and Proton Sentinel are available in Proton Plus (which costs $4.99 per month when billed monthly), along with some other advanced security features. And Pass Monitor will be available to everyone on all devices “over the next few days,” Proton says.
