Netflix will soon drop support for older Apple TV models that don’t run tvOS. Starting on July 31, 2024, the streaming service will no longer be supported on the 2nd gen Apple TV released back in 2010, as well as the 3rd gen model from 2012.
Reddit user Kroazdu (via 9to5Mac) shared the following email Netflix is sending to subscribers still watching Netflix on pre-tvOS Apple TV models:
“You’re receiving this email because you’ve used Apple TV (2nd generation) and/or Apple TV (3rd generation) with Netflix in the past. Unfortunately, we’re sunsetting support for these devices on Jul 31, 2024. We know this can be frustrating, but we’re doing this to ensure you maintain the best possible Netflix viewing experience.”
The 2nd gen and 3rd gen Apple TV ran a variant of iOS and came with a list of preinstalled apps. The fourth-gen Apple TV released back in 2015 came with the new tvOS and an App Store, and it’s still being supported along with the three 4K models released in the following years.
The 3rd gen Apple TV 4K released back in 2022 is still one of the best media players on the market, with the latest version adding HDR 10+ support and a USB-C charging port for the remote. It’s currently down to just $90 (31% off) on Verizon’s online store, though that’s for the Wi-Fi only model with 64GB of storage.
