After the cult-classic Age of Empires franchise was successfully revived with a series a remasters and the release of Age of Empires IV on PC an Xbox, a new Age of Empires Mobile game is launching on iOS and Android today. The game was released in beta on select markets earlier this year, and it’s now available globally.
This is the third Age of Empires game to launch on mobile after the Age of Empires: World Domination and Age of Empires: Castle Siege, which have both been discontinued more than five years ago. This new Age of Empires Mobile game has been developed by TiMi Studio Group, a subsidiary of Tencent Games in partnership with World’s Edge, the Microsoft studio overseeing the development of the Age of Empires franchise. TiMi Studio Group previously worked on Call of Duty: Mobile and Pokémon Unite.
Age of Empires Mobile is a mobile war strategy game designed to appeal to both fans of the franchise and newcomers. The game is free-to-play with in-app purchases, and it features eight civilizations at launch (the British, Byzantines, Chinese, Egyptians, French, Japanese, Koreans, and Romans) combined with historic figures like Darius the Great and Leonidas I that players can choose to lead their armies.
“Age of Empires Mobile introduces a brand-new entry point to the franchise for mobile gamers, with its alliance gameplay and siege battles featuring hundreds of players at war,” Earnest Yuen, Senior Director of Production from World’s Edge said. “And your empire feels so dynamic, you can hear the world come alive, with water lapping the shore and wind blowing in the trees as your empire grows.”
In recent years, Microsoft didn’t have a lot of success with mobile games inspired by some of its most popular franchises. Games like Gears Pop! and Mighty Doom were shut down pretty quickly, and recent Xbox layoffs reportedly hit the teams developing Call Of Duty: Warzone Mobile and Warcraft Rumble.
If Age of Empires Mobile appears more ambitious than previous mobile titles, gamers who prefer the more complex gameplay from the real Age of Empires games can also play them on mobile via Xbox Cloud Gaming. Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, Age of Empires IV, and Age of Mythology: Retold are all available on Microsoft’s cloud-gaming service, though they don’t offer touch controls and require a controller.
You can download Age of Empires Mobile from the App Store and Google Play Store.
