Nintendo Switch 2 is Official With First Video Trailer

Nintendo Switch 2

The successor to the Nintendo Switch is finally official, and it’s named the Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo officially revealed the new console with a first-look trailer published a couple of minutes ago. As expected, the Switch 2 looks like a bigger version of the original console with some subtle design improvements.

The video trailer shows a Nintendo Switch morphing into a Switch 2, with a bigger screen and detachable controllers that seem to connect magnetically. There’s also a new USB-C port at the top, a redesigned full-width kickstand with an adjustable angle, and a new dock accessory to connect the console to TVs.

Today’s trailer also confirmed that the new console will support both physical and digital Switch games. “Certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2,” a message also said in the video.

Lastly, the video gave us a brief look at a new Mario Kart title, which will presumably launch alongside the new console. Nintendo plans to share more details about the Switch 2 on April 2, 2025, but today’s trailer only mentioned a “2025” release date.

The original Nintendo Switch launched back in March 2017 and sold 146.04 million units to date. It’s the second best-selling Nintendo console of all time behind the Nintendo DS with 154.02 million lifetime sales.

The Nintendo Switch shipped with an ARM-based Nvidia Tegra X1 chip, and its successor is expected to use a custom Nvidia chip powerful enough to run more demanding games. However, Nintendo has always prioritized the gameplay experience over raw power, and the Switch 2 probably won’t be as powerful as Windows-based gaming handhelds using more power-hungry x86 chips.

Overall, the Nintendo Switch was a huge success for the Japanese company after the failure of the Wii U, and it will be interesting to see if the company manages to keep the momentum going with the Switch 2. The console may attract an even bigger audience if it’s indeed capable of running the latest AAA games without too many compromises.

Nintendo also announced today that it will be holding a couple of Nintendo Switch 2 Experience events around the world in the Spring where consumers will be able to go hands-on with the new console. The first events will be in New York and Paris on April 4-6, and tickets will be made available through a free-to-enter, randomly selected drawing. Registrations will open tomorrow, and you can find more information on this page.
