New iOS 18.3 Beta Tweaks Apple Intelligence Notification Summaries

iOS 18

Yesterday, Apple released the third betas for iOS 18.3 and iPadOS 18.3, which brought important changes to how Apple Intelligence notification summaries work (via 9to5Mac). Following multiple reports of inaccurate summaries of various news stories, Apple announced earlier this month that it would make it clearer when Apple Intelligence summarized text in a notification.

With the iOS 18.3 and iPadOS 18.3 beta 3, Apple now makes it clearer that notification summaries are a beta feature. In the Settings app, users will see a message warning them that notification summaries “may contain errors.” Additionally, notification summaries on the lock screen now use italicized text to better distinguish them from standard notifications.

Notification summaries remain an optional Apple Intelligence feature, and the third betas of iOS 18.3 and iPadOS 18.3 add more granular controls to them. It’s now possible to disable these notifications for specific apps right from the Lock Screen or Notification Center using a swipe gesture.

Apple also decided to temporarily disable notification summaries for News & Entertainment apps as the company is still working to refine the experience. This is probably best to ensure users no longer see inaccurate news alerts.

iOS 18.3 and iPadOS 18.3 are minor updates that should be released in the coming weeks, and Apple is reportedly planning to release more substantial changes in the Spring with the release of iOS 18.4 and iPadOS 18.4. These are the updates that should make Siri capable of controlling apps more precisely while being aware of users’ personal context.

Yesterday, Apple also released tvOS 18.2.1 for Apple TV users. This update addresses a single issue causing data to not sync correctly across devices.
