[Updated] Apple TV+ is Finally Coming to Android Devices

Apple TV app for Android

Apple’s TV+ streaming service is finally coming to Android devices a little more than five years after its launch. According to a new report from Bloomberg citing sources familiar with the matter, the native Android app for Apple’s streaming service may launch as soon as today,

As you may know, Apple TV+ was already available on Google’s Android TV, so the absence of a native app for Android phones and tablets was quite surprising. Apple also released an Apple Music app on Android devices, and Apple TV+ will likely greatly benefit from being available on the massive pool of Android devices.

Apple TV+ originally launched back in November 2019 with a small selection of original films and TV shows. The service was initially priced at $4.99/month, making it the most affordable ad-free subscription service on the market. However, Apple raised that price to $6.99/month in October 2022 and then to $9.99/month a year later.

These price increases followed Apple’s big investments in live sports and licensing agreements to get Hollywood movies and TV shows on the service. However, the core value of Apple TV+ probably remains in the critically-acclaimed original content, with several TV shows including Severance, Slow Horses, Ted Lasso, and Silo receiving critical acclaim.

In addition to this new Android app, Apple TV+ remains available on the web at tv.apple.com, and there are also dedicated Apple TV apps for Apple devices Windows PCs, smart TVs from Samsung, LG, Vizio, and Sony, Roku and Fire TV streaming devices, and Xbox and PlayStation consoles. I’ll update this post once the streaming service officially launches on Android.

Update 5:40 PM ET: The Apple TV app for Android is now live on the Google Play Store. Compared to the app available on Apple devices, the Android version is currently more limited: 9to5Mac reports that it’s not possible to purchase or rent movies and TV shows, and previous purchases are also unavailable. The Android app also doesn’t support notifications and Google Cast.
