Netflix Games Creator Has Left The Company

Mike Verdu, a video games industry veteran who oversaw the creation of the Netflix Games organization has left the company. A Netflix representative confirmed the exec’s departure from Netflix after almost four years to Game File’s Stephen Totilo.

Verdu was Vice President of Games at Netflix between December 2021 and November 2024, which is when he transitioned to a new VP of Generative AI for Games role at the company. The exec had previously developed Netflix’s internal game studios and the company’s publishing arm. Verdu oversaw the rollout of a catalog of over 100 mobile games for Netflix subscribers as well as the launch of an experimental game streaming service on PCs and TVs.

When Verdu announced his new VP of Generative AI for Games role in November, the exec said that he was “working on driving a “once in a generation” inflection point for game development and player experiences using generative AI.” At the time, Verdu also said that we should “Pay no mind to the uninformed speculation in the media about the changes in Netflix Games.”

Well, since Netflix appointed Alain Tascan as its new President of Games in July 2024, it appears to have started streamlining its gaming organization. The company shut down its AAA video game studio in October, which led to the departure of Joseph Staten, the former Halo Infinite creative lead. Netflix also canceled the release of six mobile games earlier this year.

Gaming isn’t exactly in Netflix’s DNA, and trying to compete with established competitors in that space is certainly not easy. Amazon, which is also very interested in gaming, laid off hundreds of employees in its gaming division in recent years and also started refining its Prime Gaming perks. Netflix regularly raises its prices to keep up with its increasing investments in exclusive content, but I’m sure many subscribers would be happy to pay less for a Netflix plan without games.
