Netflix is adding dialogue-only subtitles for people who prefer to only see spoken dialogue on the screen. This new dialogue option will become available on new content coming to Netflix, starting with the fifth season of YOU.
“When you open the language picker while watching the new season, you’ll now see two subtitle options in English: English, which shows only the spoken dialogue, and English (CC), which includes both dialogue and audio cues like [door slams],” the company explained.
According to Netflix, nearly half of all viewing hours on the US platform are done with subtitles or captions. Going forward, Netflix plans to offer these new dialogue-only subtitles on all of its new original films and TV shows and their available languages, in addition to traditional Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (SDH/CC). Earlier this month, Netflix also updated its TV apps to make them show the full list of available languages for any content.
In other Netflix-related news, the company raised its prices in select markets this week, with an up to NZ$6/month price bump in New Zealand, up to S$4/month in Singapore, and up to €2/month in France. Netflix previously raised its price in the UK in February after doing so in the US, Canada, Argentina, and Portugal in January.
