Alexa+ is Now Available for Over 1 Million Testers in the US

Amazon Alexa+

Alexa+, the next generation of Amazon’s AI assistant is now available in early access for over 1 million testers in the US, the company confirmed to TechCrunch earlier this week. That’s quite a big jump from last month, when Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said during the company’s Q1 2025 earnings calls that Alexa+ was available for over 100,000 users.

Amazon first announced Alexa+ in February and made it available in early access in the US on March 31. However, this has been a very slow rollout. Customers who own or purchase an Echo Show 8, 10, 15, or 21 are getting priority access, and the company plans to expand availability to more Echo devices over time (certain older generation Echo devices won’t be supported, however).

Alexa+ is free to use during the early access period. Once the next-gen version of the assistant officially launches, it will be available for free with Amazon Prime or $19.99 per month for everyone else. The original Alexa will also remain available for users who don’t want to upgrade to the new experience.

As of today, Alexa+ can engage in free-flowing conversations about any topics, manage calendars and emails, control your smart home, and take actions like booking an Uber or making dinner reservations. The new assistant can also remember important details about users and send them real-time notifications about things they care about.

Alexa+ is available on the Alexa app in addition to select Echo Show devices, but Amazon plans to make it available on the web plus Fire OS devices. The web app will offer a ChatGPT-like interface where users can summarize content, create images, plan trips, and more.

If Amazon has been late to revamp its digital assistant with generative AI features, Alexa+ may quickly reach a massive user base thanks to being a free Amazon Prime perk. The company also said in February that there are now over 600 million Alexa devices out there today, and this will be key to making Alexa+ and generative AI chatbots more accessible.
