Windows 11 version 25H2, the latest version of the OS, is starting to roll out to all Windows 11 users today. The update, which Microsoft also refers to as the “Windows 11 2025 Update,” mostly reboots the support cycle for the OS with 24 months for Home and Pro users and 36 months for Enterprise and Education users.
“Windows 11, version 25H2 will be delivered as an enablement package (eKB). This means that it contains all the recently announced features in Windows 11, version 24H2. Both versions use a shared code base and servicing branch, streamlining the update. It also means that you’ll continue to see new features released to Windows via monthly updates as part of our continuous innovation model,” explained John Cable, Vice President, Program Management, Windows Servicing and Delivery.
To be clear, Windows 11 version 25H2 doesn’t come with flashy new features. It actually removes some legacy features such as PowerShell 2.0 and Windows Management Instrumentation command-line (WMIC). On managed PCs, the update also enables Wi-Fi 7 for enterprise connectivity, and it also allows IT pros to remove select pre-installed Microsoft Store apps via Microsoft Intune or Group Policy on Enterprise and Education devices.
“Version 25H2 includes significant advancements in build and runtime vulnerability detection, coupled with AI assisted secure coding. We’ve designed version 25H2 to address and mitigate security threats in adherence to a robust security development lifecycle (SDL) policy and requirements,” Cable also said today
With Windows 11, Microsoft introduced a new “Continuous innovation” paradigm with new features coming almost every month through “Patch Tuesday” updates. The main purpose of the annual updates like 25H2 and 24H2 is now to mark the debut of a new support lifecycle.
Windows 11 users running the version 24H2 of the OS will be able to get version 25H2 early if they turn on the “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” toggle in Windows Update. As usual, Microsoft will expand the rollout over the next few months, and it will also block the update on devices where compatibility issues are suspected.
Windows 11 version 25H2 will install like a regular update on PCs running the version 24H2 of the OS. However, a full operating system swap will be required on devices still running the version 23H2 of the OS. For IT Pros, the latest version of Windows is available via Windows Autopatch and the Microsoft 365 admin center.
