Apple is discontinuing Clips, the free video editing app it launched on iOS back in 2017. In a support page (via Engadget), the company announced that Clips is no longer available to download from the App Store for new users, and it won’t be receiving any new updates.
While Clips will continue to work on iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 or earlier, the company invites users to download their videos to their photo library or another location. “You can save videos with any effects you might have added in Clips or save individual clips without effects. Then, watch your videos in other apps like Photos or make new videos with individual clips using iMovie or other third-party apps like InShot, VN Video Editor, and GoPro Quik,” the company explained.
Clips was Apple’s attempt to create an easy-to-use video editor for “making and sharing fun videos with text, effects, graphics, and more.” The app offers various free stickers, posters, filters or camera effects, including augmented reality ones. Apple also wanted the video editing app to be used in schools with an integration of Clips into the company’s Classroom and Schoolwork apps.
We last wrote about Clips back in 2019, and it’s clear the app has been out of the spotlight for a long time. While Apple still maintains its separate iMovie app, ByteDance’s free CapCut app is probably far more popular. Two weeks ago, Adobe also launched its Premiere app on iOS and iPadOS.
