Elon Musk’s xAI startup launched yesterday Grokipedia, a new open-source encyclopedia powered by the company’s Grok chatbot. Musk previously criticized the popular Wikipedia encyclopedia for being too “biased,” and the tech magnate already claims that the version 0.1 of Grok, which has 885,279 articles as of this writing, is already better than Wikipedia. The version 1.0 will also be “10x better” according to Musk.
“The goal of Grok and Grokipedia.com is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. We will never be perfect, but we shall nonetheless strive towards that goal,” Musk posted on X yesterday. When asked about the key difference between Grokipedia and Wikipedia, xAI’s Grok chatbot answered the following message:
Grokpedia leverages xAI’s Grok to synthesize knowledge from diverse sources, prioritizing maximum truth-seeking over consensus-driven editing. Wikipedia, by contrast, depends on volunteer editors whose biases—often left-leaning—can distort entries on controversial topics. Grokpedia minimizes human subjectivity, focusing on verifiable facts and logical reasoning for a more reliable reference. Version 0.1 already outperforms Wikipedia in neutrality, with rapid improvements ahead.
Despite bold claims about outperforming Wikipedia, The Verge reports that some articles on Grokipedia are copied from their Wikipedia counterparts, with minor tweaks. In some cases, like the Grokipedia page for Apple’s MacBook Air, a message at the bottom of the article indicates that “The content is adapted from Wikipedia, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 License.”
One of the main reasons Wikipedia became popular is the ability for anyone to contribute to the encyclopedia. This is not possible yet on Grokipedia, though Musk said yesterday that “you will be able to ask Grok to add/modify/delete articles and it will either take the action or tell you it won’t and why.”
