Opera today released the first version of its Opera GX gaming web browser for Linux. Opera GX was previously available on Windows and Mac.
“We know the Linux community,” Opera’s Patrick Curtin writes. “We know you value total system control, next-level customization, and robust privacy and security, all of which is baked into the DNA of Opera GX. [This is] no simple port, we’re here for the long term, with a dedicated team that will fix bugs, deploy quality of life improvements and regular updates, and be active in Linux community forums.”
Opera GX for Linux features a network and RAM limiter and a Hot Tab Killer that ensure that your games can use as many resources as possible, built-in sidebar integration with Twitch and Discord, GX Mods customization capabilities for themes, sounds, shaders, and core UI elements, a GX Store stocked with over 10,000 pre-made mods, and all the privacy protections that Linux users expect.
“We know privacy isn’t just a feature for Linux users, it’s a requirement,” Curtin adds. “That’s why Opera GX–developed in Europe and GDPR compliant–comes with a raft of privacy and security features to keep you safe while browsing.” Those features include no data tracking, built-in ad and tracker blocking, and a zero-log VPN.
You can download Opera GX from Opera from the Opera website, and Opera has instructions for those who wish to do so manually using apt.
