Last September, Google revealed a new desktop app for Windows. Today, that app is available globally, albeit only in English at first.
“Today, the upgraded Google app for desktop is now available for Windows users globally in English, bringing the best of Google Search right to your desktop,” Google group product manager of Search Vinay Mahagaokar writes. “With AI Mode built right in, you can ask whatever’s on your mind and get helpful AI-powered responses with links to the web.”
It’s impossible not to see this app as a shot across Copilot’s bow: The Google app for desktop, as it’s called, uses the same Alt + Space keyboard shortcut as Copilot (and many other apps), presents a minimalist user interface with a search box, and lets you interact with other apps and windows on your screen. But unlike with Copilot, it’s not tied to a search service or AI that no one wants. It is instead tied to Google Search and related services like Lens and the Gemini-based AI mode.
I’m also vaguely fascinated that this app is Windows-only, at least for now. Most AI-related desktop apps seem to appear first on the Mac these days. Perhaps we can thank Apple for not figuring out how to fix Siri for that.
Either way, you can learn more and download the Google app for desktop from the Google website.
