Even though Valve’s much-anticipated Steam Machine doesn’t have a firm release date yet, the company’s new Steam Controller now has one, and a price tag: It will start shipping on May 4, and it’s priced at $99 in the US and €99 in the EU.
Valve launched its first Steam Controller back in 2015, which came with two clickable trackpads with haptic feedback to mimic mouse controls. This second-generation controller still comes with two trackpads with more customization options, a gyroscope, and capacitive touch thumbsticks. The new grip-sense feature also uses capacitive touch sensors to sense if you’re holding the handles.
This new Steam Controller comes with a puck that serves as a magnetic charging station and a wireless transmitter. Valve promises 35+ hours of gameplay on a single charge with the built-in 8.39 Wh battery, and the puck can connect to up to 4 Steam Controllers on the same PC. The new controller will be able to connect wirelessly to the upcoming Steam Machine without a puck, however.
The Steam Controller is optimized for Steam games that use Steam input, which means that it won’t work properly with non-Steam games, and that may make it a non-starter for non PC gamers. However, the Steam Controller will work fine on devices that can play games remotely via the Steam Link app, including tablets and smartphones.
Valve told The Verge that it’s working with iFixit to offer official repair parts for the Steam Controller. However, the company couldn’t share more information about the launch of the Steam Machine and Steam Frame headset, which Valve previously said were coming in 2026. “Right now we don’t have any updates on that, but we’re hard at work on it, and we hope to have news soon,” Valve’s Pierre-Loup Griffais told The Verge.
