Xbox is Having Second Thoughts About Promoting Other Platforms on its Game Trailers

Halo Campaign Evolved Trailer

The Xbox team is apparently conflicted about showing other platforms’ logos on the game trailers it’s showing during its live broadcasts. Asha Sharma, the new CEO of Xbox, apparently heard the feedback from gamers who didn’t like the team promoting competing platforms, and it looks like things are going to change going forward.

Sharma, who is somewhat active on X/Twitter, reacted to a post from longtime Xbox fan Klobrille on Twitter/X yesterday. Klobrille’s post was referring to a statement from Xbox Chief Content Officer Matt Booty, who said in a new episode of the official Xbox podcast yesterday that Xbox would continue to be transparent regarding games’ availability on other platforms

“We’ll be very clear about what platforms a game is coming to, and want to continue the precedent. I think we’ve got a good system going where we make it clear in showcases,” Booty said in the podcast.

Shortly after the publication of this video, which had many comments questioning why Microsoft was the only console maker continuing to show rival logos on its trailers, Sharma posted the following message on X: “Seeing the feedback on logos. It was a miss, and I own it. We are talking about how we adjust for future XBOX shows.”

It’s true that if you look at the game trailers for Fable or Halo: Campaign Evolved on the PlayStation YouTube Channel, you’ll see no trace of Xbox or Xbox Games Studios. Even the trailer for the HALO: ODST crossover in Helldivers II made no mention of the game’s upcoming release on Xbox consoles last summer.

Was Microsoft right to be transparent about the multiplatform status of games it’s showing during Xbox broadcasts? Unfortunately, Xbox now has a real exclusive content problem now that almost all first-party Xbox games are pretty much guaranteed to ship on rival consoles.

Still, Xbox fans have loudly expressed their desire to see Xbox go back to exclusive games on the new Xbox Player Voice feedback portal. With over 21.1K votes, the demand for “exclusives” is still the #1 request on the feedback hub, beating requests for free multiplayer and more backwards-compatible games.

Microsoft will air its much-anticipated Xbox Games Showcase next week on June 7, and it will be interesting to see if the Xbox team decides to please fans and erase all logos of competing platforms. Longtime Xbox fans may be quite vocal on the Internet, but it’s hard to see how Microsoft can really go back to exclusive games now that all of its tentpole franchises (Halo, Gears of War, and Forza Horizon) are now available on PlayStation consoles.
