Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and 2 Are Being Ported to Modern PlayStation Consoles

Call of Duty Black Ops PlayStation Remasters

Activision is planning to re-release Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and 2 on modern PlayStation consoles in July. The two games, which were released during the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 era, were developed by Treyarch, and the modern PlayStation versions are being developed by Iron Galaxy, a US-based studio known for its port and support work.

After releasing two Black Ops episodes in a row in 2024 and 2025, Activision said it would stop doing back-to-back releases of Modern Warfare or Black Ops games. However, there’s probably an audience for old school episodes, especially on PlayStation consoles, which benefited from a marketing deal with Activision for Call of Duty games for many years.

Treyarch’s announcement post on X doesn’t say anything about Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch ports, so it looks like only PlayStation gamers will get to enjoy these new versions of the two Black Ops games. As you may know, the Xbox 360 versions of Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and 2 are already backwards compatible on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S consoles. Their multiplayer servers still work, even though they’ve been plagued by hackers for quite some time.

Activision has already announced the next Call of Duty game, Modern Warfare 4, which will be released on October 23 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Windows, and the Nintendo Switch 2. This will actually be the first Call of Duty game to ship on a Nintendo console since the release of Call of Duty: Ghosts on the Wii U back in 2013. Modern Warfare 4 will be released a month before GTA VI, and the latter will likely make it very difficult for other games to stand out during the busy holiday season.
