Samsung shared some details today about its new Flex Titanium Technology that will make its debut in new foldable devices to be revealed during its Galaxy Unpacked on July 22. That should include the Galaxy Z Flip 8 and the Galaxy Z Fold 8, and the latter is being teased today in a video trailer for the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie (via 9to5Google).
In recent years, Samsung has been one of the biggest manufacturers of foldable phones along with Motorola, Google, Oppo, and Honor. Apple should soon join that camp with its first foldable iPhone, which is expected to be announced later this fall.
While foldable phones are usually more expensive than regular smartphones, their displays are also more fragile. With its new Flex Titanium technology, Samsung claims to have achieved a new technological breakthrough: Its foldable displays will have a less visible crease, all without compromising on durability or portability. This is thanks to the integration of two titanium-based components: a titanium-alloy film below the OLED panel that supports the display from within, and a titanium plate that supports the display from beneath.
“By introducing sophisticated micro-patterned holes to the folding section of the titanium plate, we have successfully secured flexibility with robust durability,” said Kyung-Jin Yoo, EVP and Head of Mobile Display Product Development Team, Samsung Display. “Combining high-resolution display architecture with new organic materials that maximize power efficiency, we will further strengthen the competitiveness of next-generation Galaxy foldable devices.”
In the press release, Samsung said that it will share more details about its new Flex Titanium technology during its Galaxy Unpacked event next week. In addition to new Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip models, the company is also expected to reveal a new version of its Galaxy Watch Ultra, which is also briefly teased in the Spider-Man trailer above.
