Microsoft Ships Five New Insider Builds With a Major File Explorer Update

The Windows Insider Program shipped new Windows 11 pre-release builds across five channels today. And Microsoft provided a related update to its plans to improve File Explorer by shipping an app update to Insiders that improves its context menu experience.

New builds include:

• Beta: Build 26220.9202
• Experimental: Build 26340.9212
• Beta (26H1): Build 28020.2731
• Experimental (26H1): Build 28120.2738
• Experimental (Future Platforms): Build 29648.1000

The biggest new feature in each is a new, redesigned context menu for File Explorer. This menu is faster, simpler, more customizable, and more consistent and predictable than before, Microsoft says, and has improved navigation workflows. There’s a new “Customize menu” item at its bottom that opens a new settings page for the app, and Microsoft says this is just the first of several coming updates to File Explorer, so more is on the way.

“We are committed to continue doing the hard work and consistently improving File Explorer month after month,” the File Explorer team explains. “Not every update will be obvious on its own, but together they should make File Explorer feel faster, polished, and more dependable across tasks users do most.”
