Apple Announces ‘Welcome Home’ Event on October 13

Apple Welcome Home Event October 13

It’s official, Apple will be holding a special event dedicated to smart home products on October 13. The tagline for the event is “Welcome home,” and the teaser video for the event shared by Gret Joswiak, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Marketing, includes a throwback to the rainbow-colored Apple logo the company used until 1999.

Apple is expected to reveal at least three products during the event: A new smart display similar to Amazon’s Echo Show and Google’s Nest Hub products, a new version of its Apple TV media player, and an updated HomePod mini. All three products should integrate Siri AI, the new version of Apple’s assistant that launched in beta in English on iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watch models that support Apple Intelligence.

In addition to its new smart home display, Apple may also reveal new smart home accessories developed in collaboration with LG. Earlier this week, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Apple was working on a “formal reboot” of its HomeKit ecosystem, and LG is expected to be working on various compatible products including a doorbell, thermostat, deadbolt lock, indoor security camera, outdoor security camera, and floodlight camera.

While Apple has a lot of catching up to do in the smart home market, the company’s new Siri AI is also far from being ready. The new assistant should add support for French, Portuguese, Spanish, Japanese, and Korean in the coming weeks, but in the EU, Apple only made it available on macOS due to DMA compliance concerns.

Siri AI will probably be available in the EU on Apple’s new smart display, Apple TV, and HomePod mini as, unlike iOS and iPadOS, these platforms aren’t regulated under the DMA. However, it’s not clear yet if Apple’s new smart display will require an iPhone with Siri AI to work.
