Google AI Studio is Now Open to Everyone, Not Just Developers

Google AI Studio is a developer IDE for the web that supports vibe-coding Android and web apps. But now it’s available to everyone with a personal Google account in select markets, including the U.S. for users 18 and older.

“Using Google AI Studio, you can vibe code a custom Android app. Since many of these apps start out as personal projects, through Google Play you can now launch these personal apps on your own device,” Google vice president Sam Bright explains. “This means your creations stay private, secure, and separate from the public store catalog. You only need your standard Google account to do so — no developer account required.”

Google AI Studio originally targeted web apps but it was updated to support Android app creation during Google I/O this past May, and I used it to vibe-code a few different Markdown editor apps. With this change, anyone (where supported) can use this fascinating tool, and if you create an app you wish to share with others, you can graduate to a professional developer account, Google says, and potentially put it in the Play Store.

For those that don’t wish to register as a developer, Google will soon allow anyone to share your personal apps with a close circle of friends and family. That update will be available “in the coming months,” the company says. It didn’t say how this would work but based on the one screenshot Google provided (see above), this, too will happen through the Play Store.
