Nvidia RTX Video HDR Can Now Convert SDR Videos Into HDR

Nvidia RTX Video HDR

Nvidia has launched this week a new RTX Video HDR feature that uses AI to turn standard dynamic range (SDR) videos on the web into high dynamic range (HDR). The feature requires a PC with an Nvidia GeForce RTX GPU and the new January Studio Driver.

RTX Video HDR currently works in Chromium-based browsers including Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome. It can also work in tandem with RTX Video Super Resolution, Nvidia’s AI-powered upscaling technology for web videos.

“Using the power of Tensor Cores on GeForce RTX GPUs, RTX Video HDR allows gamers and creators to maximize their HDR panel’s ability to display vivid, dynamic colors, preserving intricate details that may be inadvertently lost due to video compression,” the company explained yesterday.

You can see a demo of Nvidia’s RTX Video HDR technology in the video below:

RTX Video supports all RTX GPUs on consumer notebook and desktop PCs, and you’ll of course need an HDR 10 compatible display. To enable RTX Video HDR on your PC, you’ll need to install Nvidia’s January Studio Driver and enable HDR support in the Windows Settings app. In the separate Nvidia Control panel, you’ll also need to go to Adjust video image settings > RTX Video Enhancement and then enable HDR.

On Windows 11, Microsoft also introduced an Auto HDR feature that can change the color range and brightness in old SDR-only games to display them in HDR. Auto HDR made its debut on Xbox Series X|S consoles, and while it’s not perfect, it can make a noticeable difference if you have a good HDR display.
