ChatGPT has crossed 200 million weekly active users, OpenAI told Axios today. The leading generative AI company also said that its chatbot, which quickly became one of the fastest-growing apps of all time after its release in November 2022, has doubled its user base since last year.
“People are using our tools now as a part of their daily lives, making a real difference in areas like healthcare and education—whether it’s helping with routine tasks, solving hard problems, or unlocking creativity,” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a statement shared with Axios.
92% of Fortune 500 companies are using OpenAI’s products, the company also said today. While ChatGPT may have become a synonym for “AI” for most people, OpenAI appears ready to challenge Google on search. Last month, the company launched “SearchGPT,” a search engine prototype with conversational capabilities. While SearchGPT is currently available in limited preview, OpenAI said it planned to integrate its best features into ChatGPT.
As Big Tech companies like Apple, Microsoft, Google, and Meta are racing to catch up with OpenAI, the Wall Street Journal is reporting that the ChatGPT maker is in talks to raise “several billion dollars” to pursue its ambitions. A new funding round that may involve Microsoft, Apple, and Thrive Capital could push the startup’s valuation beyond the $100 billion bar.
