Google’s Gemini chatbot can now reference past chats if you pay to access Gemini Advanced features. This new memory feature is now rolling out for English users on the web and the Gemini mobile app, and Google plans to add support for more languages in the coming weeks.
“Whether you’re asking a question about something you’ve already discussed, or asking Gemini to summarize a previous conversation, Gemini now uses information from relevant chats to craft a response,” explained David Citron, Senior Director of Product for Google’s Gemini app. “That means no more starting over from scratch or having to search for a previous conversation thread. Plus, you can build on top of previous conversations or projects you’ve already started.”
Gemini Advanced subscribers can still control what to keep in their chat history, and Google also continues to offer the option to not save any Gemini app activity or have it automatically deleted at different time intervals.
Google Gemini isn’t the only chatbot to offer a “memory” feature to improve its responses: OpenAI’s ChatGPT can also remember things you discuss across all chats, and users are also in control of what gets saved or not. However, OpenAI makes this memory feature available on the free version of the chatbot.
For consumers, Gemini Advanced with this new memory feature is available via the $19.99/month Google One AI Premium plan. Google Workspace Business and Enterprise customers, who are now all paying more for Gemini features whether they like it or not, will get access to this new memory capability over the coming weeks.
