OpenAI’s Sora Video Generation Model is Now Available in the EU and the UK

OpenAI’s Sora video generation model is now available for users in the EU, the UK, Switzerland, Norway, Liechtenstein, and Iceland. Access currently requires a ChatGPT Plus (€23/month) or Pro (€229/month), with some usage limits. Sora is also not available for people under the age of 18.

OpenAI officially launched Sora back in December, and the video generation technology can create original videos from a text prompt, similar to Meta’s Movie Gen model or the Veo 2 model from Google’s DeeMind AI lab. “Sora serves as a foundation for AI that understands and simulates reality—an important step towards developing models that can interact with the physical world,” the company explained in December.

Currently, ChatGPT Plus users can use Sora to generate up to 50 videos at 480p resolution or fewer videos at 720p each month. With a ChatGPT Pro subscription, users can generate longer and more detailed videos (up to 1080p and 20 sec long) in widescreen, vertical, or square aspect ratios. However, OpenAI also acknowledged that its video generation model “often generates unrealistic physics and struggles with complex actions over long durations.”

This is a big week for OpenAI as the company also released a research preview of its new GPT-4.5 model yesterday. The new model, which is very resource-intensive, is currently only available for ChatGPT Pro subscribers and developers.
