Microsoft has just revealed another Copilot assistant for clinical workflows named Microsoft Dragon Copilot. It leverages technology from Nuance Communications, a speech recognition and AI leader Microsoft acquired for $19.7 billion three years ago.
You may already know Nuance for its popular Dragon speech recognition solutions for consumers and businesses. With Microsoft Dragon Copilot, the company combined the speech capabilities of Dragon Medical One (DMO) and the ambient AI technology of DAX Copilot to create a unified voice assistant optimized for patient care.
The new AI assistant will be able to search for medical information from trusted sources, make this information easily digestible for clinicians, and automate certain tasks such as conversational orders and clinical evidence summaries. Microsoft also said that Dragon Copilot capabilities are built on a secure architecture with healthcare-specific compliance safeguards.
“At Microsoft, we have long believed that AI has the incredible potential to free clinicians from much of the administrative burden in healthcare and enable them to refocus on taking care of patients,” said Joe Petro, corporate vice president of Microsoft Health and Life Sciences Solutions and Platforms. “With the launch of our new Dragon Copilot, we are introducing the first unified voice AI experience to the market, drawing on our trusted, decades-long expertise that has consistently enhanced provider wellness and improved clinical and financial outcomes for provider organizations and the patients they serve.”
Microsoft Dragon Copilot will be available via the Microsoft Cloud for Healthcare. The new AI assistant will first launch in the US and Canada in May, with availability in the UK, Germany, France and the Netherlands coming at a later date.
