OpenAI is expanding access to GPT-4.5, its latest model released as a research preview for a limited audience last week. GPT-4.5 was initially only available for ChatGPT Pro subscribers and developers, and it’s now rolling out to ChatGPT Plus members with some usage limits.
The ChatGPT maker previously said about GPT-4.5 that it was its largest and “strongest” model yet, better at solving more complex problems and understanding the world. GPT-4.5 should also be less likely to hallucinate compared to previous models.
Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI also warned last week that GPT-4.5 wasn’t a “reasoning model” and that it wouldn’t perform significantly better in AI benchmarks. “It is the first model that feels like talking to a thoughtful person to me. I have had several moments where i’ve sat back in my chair and been astonished at getting actually good advice from an AI,” Altman posted on X.
The full rollout of GPT-4.5 to ChatGPT Plus members should take up to 3 days, OpenAI said today. As for usage limits, the company said that they will likely change as demand and usage will evolve. Altman previously explained that GPT-4.5 was a “giant, expensive model,” adding that OpenAI would need to add “ tens of thousands of GPUs” before it could roll out the new model to the ChatGPT Plus tier.
