OpenAI is Reportedly Working on its Own Social Network

OpenAI is reportedly working on its own social network that could be integrated into ChatGPT. Citing multiple sources, The Verge says that the X-like platform is still in its early stages of development, with an internal prototype currently mixing a social feed with image generation features.

In a separate report, The Information confirmed that OpenAI is developing “an X-like social feed within ChatGPT” that people could use to share user-generated images and prompt tips. OpenAI CEO Altman previously teased that the company may be working on a “social app” in response to Meta’s plans to launch a standalone Meta AI app.

It does make sense for OpenAI to have its own social platform, as its competitors Meta and X have access to an ocean of user-generated content they can use to train their AI models. OpenAI and its competitors use a combination of sources to train their AI models, including information that is publicly available online and licensed information. However, having a social platform where users share real-time news can make a real difference for AI training. In its GPT-4.1 announcement yesterday, OpenAI mentioned that its latest models for developers had “a refreshed knowledge cutoff of June 2024.”

Meta also understands why training its AI models on public content created by Facebook and Instagram users can improve its models. Earlier this week, the company announced that it would soon start training its Meta AI chatbot, which the company says has more than 700 million monthly active users, with public content from EU users. According to the company, this is all about understanding “the incredible and diverse nuances and complexities that make up European communities.”

Last but not least, it wouldn’t be surprising if there wasn’t some ego aspect in OpenAI’s new social ambitions. Despite his public rivalry with Elon Musk, Sam Altman still uses X as his main communication platform today. After Altman publicly mocked an unsolicited $97.4 billion acquisition offer from Elon Musk and a consortium of investors, you can imagine that the OpenAI CEO would very much like to distance his online identity from a rival platform like X.
