OpenAI is making its new GPT-4.1 model available for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team users today. The new model was announced a month ago alongside GPT‑4.1 mini and GPT‑4.1 nano, and all three models were only available via OpenAI’s developer API until now. The ChatGPT maker finally changed course “by popular request.”
“GPT-4.1 is a specialized model that excels at coding tasks. Compared to GPT-4o, it’s even stronger at precise instruction following and web development tasks, and offers an alternative to OpenAI o3 and OpenAI o4-mini for simpler, everyday coding needs,” the company explained today.
By popular request, GPT-4.1 will be available directly in ChatGPT starting today.

GPT-4.1 has the same rate limits as GPT-4o, OpenAI’s flagship model that can reason across audio, vision, and text in real time. Moreover, GPT-4.1 is faster than both OpenAI o3 and o4-mini, the company’s most powerful reasoning models that were already available for paid ChatGPT users.
ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team users can access GPT-4.1 via the “more models” dropdown in the model picker. Enterprise and Education users will get access to the new model in the coming weeks.
Lastly, GPT-4.1 mini is also replacing GPT-4o mini in the model picker for paid ChatGPT users today. GPT-4o mini used to be OpenAI’s fastest model for everyday tasks, but it lacked support for file uploads and data analysis tools.
“GPT-4.1 mini is a fast, capable, and efficient small model, delivering significant improvements compared to GPT-4o mini—in instruction-following, coding, and overall intelligence,” OpenAI explained today. While GPT-4.1 mini is now replacing GPT-4o mini in the model picker for paid users, it will also serve as a fallback model for ChatGPT Free users once they reach their GPT-4o usage limits.
