The consumer version of Microsoft’s Copilot assistant now supports image generation using OpenAI’s GPT-4o model. ChatGPT added GPT‑4o image generation in late March, and Microsoft first brought the new capability to Microsoft 365 Copilot, the enterprise version of its AI assistant, last month.
OpenAI’s GPT-4o model can create photorealistic images with accurate text rendering. It also lets users edit existing images and refine them with follow-up prompts. This makes Microsoft Copilot much better at creating images than Microsoft Designer and Bing Image Creator, which still use OpenAI’s older DALL-E 3 model.

Microsoft’s partnership with OpenAI allows the company to integrate the AI startup’s latest innovations into Copilot after ChatGPT gets them first. The Redmond giant is also more generous with advanced features such as Think Deeper and Voice conversations, which no longer have usage restrictions.
Over time, the consumer version of Copilot may become more than just Microsoft’s custom version of ChatGPT. Mustafa Suleyman, the CEO of Microsoft AI said last month that he wanted Copilot to become a true “AI companion” that can remember your personal preferences, daily routine, and take actions on your behalf. Microsoft also continues to work on its own AI models that are allegedly “competitive” with those from OpenAI and Anthropic.
