Google is upgrading the new Photo to Video tool in Google Photos with its latest Veo 3 video generation model. The new feature is currently only available for users in the US alongside other generative AI features in the app’s Create tab.
Veo 3 is Google’s latest image-to-video model that can generate high-quality videos with sound effects, ambient noise, and even dialogue. In Gemini-powered apps, creating videos with Veo 3 requires a Google AI Pro or Google AI Ultra subscription, so Google making the model available for free (with usage limits) in Google Photos is quite a big deal.
In the US, the Photo to Video feature in Google Photos is available from the app’s Create tab. After picking a photo, users will get to choose between the “Subtle movement” or “I’m feeling lucky” options. All videos generated in Photos will also include a visual watermark for transparency. However, free users will only be able to turn a limited number of static photos into videos.
This new Create tab in Google Photos also offers a Remix feature to restyle a photo into other styles. However, all videos and photos generated with Photo to video and Remix also include an invisible SynthID digital watermark.
